" I fuck noisy bath fans*

Walking by, they might assume another small business has gone under. Its windows boarded up. But those who look more will catch it. A gasp, a laugh, maybe a smirk will be pulled out of them. A double take perhaps? Wouldn’t that be fun!

I fuck noisy bath fans is a perfect encapsulation of my nonsense practice. Every piece of wood in the window was cut with a jigsaw. Yes, I used a manual, handheld jigsaw to cut 7/16” OSB scrapboard for god’s sake. Like I said, nonsense.

Now they really look at it. They congratulate themself on noticing the gaps. Human error, they conclude. An act of play — perhaps an outburst of whimsy, not taking things too seriously. It must be a labour of love, they think.

No, it was a labour of hate, an invisible kind of labour. Is it labour if I choose to do it myself? Is it invisible if I am begging someone, anyone to notice it — to appreciate it? It is on display, specifically for them to examine, think about, talk about, judge on their individual scales of value. But they are ignorant to the aches and pains, the hours, days, weeks put into this sinkhole of a project. The sheer volume of sawdust inhaled.

At least they are amused by the silly phrases. They puff little laughs out their nose.

I fuck noisy bath fans; I freak noisy bath fans; I finger noisy bath fans; the possibilities for iterations are endless. Instead of skewing physical forms, I shift, remove, and add letters in phrases, bending the advertisements to my will.

This is easy, when you are witty like me. The iterations are inevitable, they’re forced upon me. But why would anyone care? If I cannot succeed, I will entertain.

Oh! It must be about late capitalism. Yes, of course! Now they get it — it’s subversive, it’s weird. A cousin to pop art, they decide. They knew it all along.

“They knew it all along” I sigh deeply and roll my eyes at this. Good for them, at least one of us knows what this is about. But who gives a fuck? Not me.

Not them either. They didn’t stop to look and you probably didn’t make it this far. Who reads these fucking things anyway?

Did you like that? Pretty edgy right? Surely that’ll sell some of these, get them off my hands. Because my debt penetrates deep like my dick in a noisy bath fan.

About the Artist

ANNA GOLDING is an alumni of the undergraduate Studio Art program at the University of Guelph. She maintains a studio in The Ward and is currently in the midst of completing an internship with the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB Group).

ANNA GOLDING romanticizes her own labour. She finds increasingly meticulous and difficult processes of making, searching for the edge of what is possible. ANNA constructs forms in 2D and 3D, usually combining the two spatial realms; using one to get to the other. In either dimension she meddles with scale and repetition to create a catalog of iterations in form. Her work is always skewered with wit and humour and if you can’t find it, it usually means you are the butt of the joke. Having recently moved to working in the skilled trades, ANNA’s focus has shifted to objects and moments in construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing.
