Memory Markers | Jordan Pedersen

Showing August 26 to September 9, 2024

"I have been to the Toronto Islands exactly three times. The first time was in 2019 with my cousin, who had visited Canada many times before, but never the island. Being the first time for both of us, we spent the day walking and talking. She gave me a sweater that she had knit based on her memory of my size, and it fit perfectly. It was the last time I saw her; she has since died. I wondered what it would be like to try to do those same walks alone. Would I be able to notice what is different? Would walking surface memories that I would not remember otherwise?

Two walks are installed in Memory MarkersJune 7, 2024, and June 5, 2024. The process for each was the same – tie my yarn to a place I remembered being with her and start walking. As memories came back, they were marked on the yarn with a stitch marker. Each walk was then finger knitted. They are displayed hanging from each of those memory markers.

These works were developed over a week as part of the Walking & Art: discussions at the wayside residency at Gibraltar Point."
