" ‘Reflections Hold Me When I Can’t’ shows a wide array of vulnerable experiences, including complicated familial grief and my first heartbreak, through the combination of self-portraiture and drawing. When feelings of immense overwhelming sadness, joy or even mundane boredom come to fruition, I hold my camera close like a security blanket. My tears stop running. All I can think about is the light. The patterns. The shadows. The colours. The reflections then hold me when I can’t. As I adjust the shutter speed and focus, I no longer float; I am grounded in this moment of time. I am held both within the reflective surface and within the camera. Due to the nature of film photography these emotions are often at times held within the metal cage of my camera for months at a time. Once the film is developed, the emotions once previously captured, escape and I am able to reflect back on the emotions I had felt at the time. In conjunction with the 10 photographs, there are 10 corresponding drawings done around the same time which provide insight into the feelings behind the photographs. I invite you to step into my shoes and experience these emotions as if they were your own."
