"Wound is a series of works navigating the aftermath of my father’s death, created during my thesis year at OCAD U. The encaustic is layered with mulberry paper, and there are many layers in each piece; with each one, I obscure my subject matter with organic, flesh-like texture, veins, and bruising. With this, I attempt to capture the hazy, dreamlike dissonance of grieving. I have chosen to portray the remnants of living things, fossils and bones - these things are emblematic for me, physical representations of my pain.

Having experienced a loss that has uprooted my life, my view of reality is often obscured, and my goal is to express this shrouded view of life, as if through a veil. My being is at odds with my being, and these words are the guiding principle of my current work.

These pieces are a way for me to process my grief."

About the Artist

Sara Naveed (b. 2002) is a visual artist born in Queens and based in Toronto. She is currently completing an undergraduate degree in Drawing & Painting with a minor in Printmaking and Publications at OCAD U. She works in a wide variety of mediums, including encaustic, printmaking, and oil. Naveed’s work is an expression of identity, grief, and the metaphysical through the depiction of organic material such as fossils, bones, insects, and the human figure. She endeavours to find sense in the transient, seemingly unintelligible aspects of emotion.
